Hello world!

Welcome to my home page about poetry in young adult literature. This blog aims to answer the question: How could a teacher use Young Adult (YA) novels to teach poetry in the classroom? This blog is not only limited to verse novels (which are novels that look as if it’s a poetry book, but the entire novel has a cohesive story) but also novels that include main characters who write or reference poetry. This blog aims to aid teachers, students, and parents in young adult literature with the inclusion of poetry. I hope this blog can give anyone some ideas how to teach poetry in a classroom or homeschooling setting.

We all remember learning about poetry in school. I personally remember learning about many different types of poem forms and trying to create my own. I also remember being given very difficult poems to critique and try to come up with a deeper understanding. These were the days I dreaded, they were my least favorite day of language arts. It wasn’t until I was much older did I find a love for poetry. This passion for poetry was developed through novels. Yes, just regular novels that included poetry. I specifically remember reading Paper Town and having a feeling of admiration from the poem  Song of Myself  by Walt Whitman. This novel and the poem included in it sparked my interest in poetry.

I hope this blog allows you to advance your own teaching and allow students a greater access to poetry on a broader spectrum.
