Africa Not Fashionable Enough. Seriously ? by toytuns(f): 4:49am On Dec 12, 2010
It all about Vogue Africa.
I came across a blog on a website and decided to share it.
Who said Africa is not fashionable enough.
Click on the link to follow the blog and comment.

The red top looks like very normal. Was that actually the front cover undecided
The silver top looks brown mat (eni) painted silver and too much bosoms on display
The middle one . . I like, but it is not mind blowing or extraordinary in any way
And in all three, the photoshopping is too obvious.

Vanitty I agreed with you, that was what i thought at first. It doesn't really look natural.
But I think he has a great thinking. You need to read the blog on that website.
But at least Vogue needs to give Africa a chance.
Why would they think Africa is not fashionable enough, we are great, we have a lot of art, culture and great
different things.
We have lots of great artist, designers etc coming up from Africa.

I think its a very good attempt.

I don't blame them jare, they are just protecting their brand's name.

I just checked the website, you pasted the wrong pictures LOL. There are some amazing pictures on there, I love the jungle fever & the grace-jones-look-alike ones. Good luck to the dude

Hmmm, I remember hearing about this months ago.

Protecting their image? That is by far the lamest excuse I have ever heard. Its all about race!!! Look, I've been to those fashion week parties and behind all the glitz and glam is nothin' but racism. Smh, you wouldn't believe the sort of conversations I've overheard people having. It's a damn shame. Oh by the way here's a link to another article written about it. I love that site by the way, I check it out ever week when they have new articles >>> http://cocoandcreme.com/2010/07/vogue-africa-rejected-by-conde-nast . Anway, Condé Nast has always had a reputation for their underhanded racism.

We Africans face a lot when it comes to the western world. I think its about race, i think it's about them protecting their image ans also its about money, Their fear of Vogue Africa getting well recognize than theirs. The guy lives abroad and has photo shot a lot of celebrities.
So his potential of breaking through in the industry is great.

He's already known in the industry. Its obvious that he has talent and that he does good work. It's a combination or racism, capitalism, and fear of the unknown undecided . Its sad. Some of those people at the events I go to with my sister, the people will sit there and smile to your face while at the same time talk bad about you tongue.

Why must we glorify mediocrity. Assuming the pics were amazing, then we can say "oh racism at work", but they are not so I guess we will never know!
The first picture is just a pisstake in my opinion undecided but with lots of efforts and hardwork, he will get there kiss

If you consider mediocrity as Anna Wintour pulling Naomi Campbell from the cover of Vogue and replacing her with a white model then what is actual racism? Its a know fact that the woman doesn't like putting black models on the covers let alone creating a Vogue Africa. Just because there have been little sprinkles of black models on the cover of Vogue doesn't mean that its not racism.

Yep, heard about that too.
If you saw the fashion runway season 5, where we have Korto Momolu fro Ghana. It was very glaring that her design were way more sell-able. Even when she came back for the all star.

Oh Yes I mean from Liberia. When she came to an expo in Minneapolis, she told me girl, just go for what you believe.
Close your eyes and move forward. She inspired me continue my apparel design school. Though I'm not done yet, but i've seen a lot already.
I've been to some fashion show here in Minneapolis and also some in Chicago, so I really understand what you meant about the Vogue Africa thing.

Eh ya, I wish you lots of success in your fashion endeavors. Momolu really seems like a nice woman. I haven't met her in person but I've been to some events where she was at and she seems pretty cool. Have you ever thought of getting involved in New York African Fashion Week? A close family friend of mine was in it last season and I was so proud of her.

Good, this is the sort of determination I wanna see. Can't wait to see your desins on the runway. By the way, do you have a line if so, what is the name?

the pics are professionally done and the models are beautiful, the only problem is no white publication will bother with them because western society does not promote the beauty of black women.  This is the reason why Naomi Campbell despite having very european facial features and body shape STILL faces discrimination in the modelling industry.  The western modelling and beauty industry has been established to promote and extoll the beauty of white women, all other races are expected to aspire to be as "beautiful" as white women not the other way around, this is why an african vogue will never be permitted.

Until very recently black women were not even considered a viable market to target when selling beauty products.

I think we need to look at doing our own thing and not always seek to copy and promote western ideals of beauty, many of the clothes modelled stil retain the style and aesthetics normally associated with white women - the white ideal of beauty is not the same as the black ideal of beauty therefore we should learn to have the confidence to be our own people and build on the god given attributes that we have.
