'Royal matatus' decorated with graffiti ahead of King Charles III visit

The United Kingdom Embassy in Kenya on Friday unveiled royal matatus ahead of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla's visit to the country next week. 

The four matatus decorated with Graffitis were displayed at the Greenpark Terminus in Nairobi. 

The matatus have been decorated with the printed British flag at the front, combined with that of Kenya.

On the side view of the Matatu, one can see the Masaai Moran carrying the British flag, and a touch of a photo of Kenya International Conference Center to symbolise Nairobi CBD, with a giraffe, and Zebras on the side for the National parks around the country.  

In the graffiti, the Maasai Mirans are doned in their cultural attires. 

Another one has been decorated with a picture of the Kenya Sevens players, the flamingos of Nakuru, and celebrated Marathoner Eliud Kipchoge. 

Additionally, other matatus have images of their Majesties King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla. 

The decoration was done by celebrated Graffiti Artist Graff Matwana, founder and CEO of the Matwana Culture. 

When their Majesties land in Kenya, the decorated royal matatus will be part of their convoy and will ferry some of the officials, from the embassy, and others.  

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will from October 31 to November 3, 2023 visit Kenya for an official visit. 

This will be Charles's first official visit to Kenya since he was crowned King in May 2023, and a historical one as this is the country in which his mother was announced Queen Elizabeth II, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.

Queen Elizabeth II was 25 years old at the time. 

During their visit, the King and Queen will meet President William Ruto and First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, as well as other members of government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, young people, future leaders, and Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines. 

"The King will also attend an event to celebrate the life and work of the Nobel Laureate the late Professor Wangari Maathai, together with Wangari’s daughter, Wanjira Mathai."
